2015: No Basis For Objection Over Buhari’s Credentials – INEC

Gen. Mohammadu Buhari releases new campaign photos
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said there was no basis for objection to the affidavit presented by the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Gen Muhammadu Buhari, over the circumstances surrounding his certificates.
It also said that it does not have the mandate to screen or reject candidates and stressed that its role was simply to display the nominees of parties for claims and objections, noting that only when there are objections will they revert to the parties to do the needful.
The APC presidential candidate, Buhari, did not submit his certificates and other credentials to INEC, saying that the documents are with the military.
He however explained the development in an affidavit dated November 24, 2014 which he deposed to before an Abuja High Court.
But the chief press secretary to the INEC chairman, Kayode Idow,u who insisted that he would not comment on individual candidates said: “When parties file the nominees, the law requires that INEC should display those nominees for claims and objections. If objections are made to those claims, the commission reverts to the parties because the statutory mandate is on the parties to nominate their candidates, not for INEC to choose their candidates for them.

Nigerians Will Praise Me After Leaving Office – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday said he did not expect Nigerians to shower praises on him while he is still in office.
President-Goodluck-Jonathan-Bella-Naija-869x1024
He said it was normal that public office holders would only be commended after leaving office by the time his achievements were being compared with others.
Jonathan spoke while granting audience to a delegation from his home state, Bayelsa.
Members of the delegation led by Governor Seriake Dickson were in the Presidential Villa, Abuja to felicitate with him on Christmas and New Year festivities.
The President said notwithstanding the various challenges facing the country, he would do his best to make his people proud.
He said, “I always say that I will not even expect praises now because hardly do people praise serving leaders. It is when you leave, people will begin to know.
“When you leave, people will begin to compare what you have done over the period vis-a-vis what others have done, then they will compare you with whoever takes over.
“Probably that is the time some people will begin to say good about you. But I will do my best to make sure that we do change things.
“We are trying to create enabling environment for our economy to thrive irrespective of the challenges we are having in the petroleum sector and the security challenges we have.
“I will do my best so that by the time I will leave, you will be able to say that when our son was there, he served the country well so that one day, another son of Bayelsa may be given another opportunity to serve Nigerians.”
Jonathan observed that it has become the norm worldwide for people to be lambasting their leaders, especially on the social media.
He regretted that people are using different things that have been created by people’s knowledge for negative purposes.
He cited an example of dynamite, saying the inventor regretted when he realised the destructive purposes people have turned the item to.
The President added, “I assure you that I am here by the grace of God and with the willingness of Nigerians. If Nigerians say I shouldn’t be here, I wouldn’t have been here. We contested election in 2011 and Nigerians voted for us.
“I am your own, if I don’t do well, the shame will be on you. If I do well, you will have some kind of pride. I will do my best.

Only Those Who Love Hunger Will Vote Jonathan – APC VP Candidate Osinbajo

Vice Presidential Candidate of the APC, Prof Yemi Osibajo says it is only Nigerians who love hunger that will return the present administration into office in 2015. He said this at a town hall meeting for artisans, tradesmen and farmers organised by the Lagos state government at the state secretariat yesterday December 30th 2015.
“No one is ignorant of all that is happening to us in this country. No one likes hunger and poverty; but people are hungry. In 2015, only those who love to continue to be hungry would prefer that the government in power at the centre remains there. By God’s grace, we would remove them from the seat of power. The people there presently cannot do anything, because they don’t know how to. They lack the capacity and capability to govern the country. I pray for the farmers and artisans that the Lord will bless us in the incoming year.” he said

AirAsia Flight Found Upside Down At The Bottom Of The Sea, Passengers Found Holding Hands

download (1)
Indonesian search officials have now confirmed they have located the fuselage of AirAsia flight 8501 on sonar radar, upside down on the sea floor, not far from where three of the bodies from the doomed AirAsia flight were found holding hands when discovered floating in the Java Sea. Officials from Basarnas, Indonesia’s search and rescue agency, say the plane wreckage has been located in 24 to 30 metres of water and one of the seven confirmed recovered bodies was wearing a life jacket.
Lieutenant Airman Tri Wobowo, who was co-piloting Indonesia’s C130 Herclues aircraft, was the first to discover debris from the plane and witnessed the tragic scene.
‘There were seven to eight people. Three of them held hands,’ he told a local newspaper.
A plane door, a blue suitcase, oxygen tank and the remnants of an emergency slide were among the objects found about 10km from where the plane was last detected on radar. But the most harrowing discoveries were the corpses floating in the Java Sea – about 100 miles off the coast – and search chiefs fully expect none of the 162 passengers and crew on board made it out of the wreckage alive.

Focus shifts to recovery as debris, bodies from #QZ8501 are found

- Debris and bodies from AirAsia flight QZ8501 were found on Tuesday afternoon after a gruelling search by international teams. Indonesian president Joko Widodo says the recovery of the passengers and the crew is now the priority.

- At least 3 bodies have been pulled from the sea. Earlier reports of 40 bodies recovered was a “miscommunication”, according to the Indonesian navy.

- Images of floating bodies were broadcast on Indonesian TV and spread on social media, triggering an uproar by families of the victims.

- Naval vessels and aircraft from countries such as Singapore continue to arrive in the vicinity to assist in the retrieval effort. The US is now sending a second naval vessel to join the operations.

BACKGROUNDER

- Indonesia air traffic control lost contact with AirAsia flight QZ8501 on Sunday morning. The flight was en route to Singapore from Surabaya, Indonesia, with 162 people on board. Communications were severed roughly an hour after the plane left Juanda International Airport.

- The plane was last seen on radar over the Java Sea between Belitung island and Pontianak, on Indonesia's part of Kalimantan island.

- The communications log suggests that the pilot was approved to veer left because of poor weather conditions. He then asked air traffic control for permission to climb to 38,000 feet from 32,000. There was no further communication after that.
We've put together the stories of some of the passengers and crew on board the plane as well.

LAWMA to convert popular Ojota dump site to golf course

Have you ever passed by Ojota going towards Maryland in Lagos? Then you would have noticed the Olusosun dumpsite that stinks to the high heavens. The news is that Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) said yesterday that it would soon turn the Olusosun dumpsite in Ojota into a golf course. Tagged as Nigeria’s most popular refuse dump, Olusosun has been a subject of foreign documentaries in the past because of the many activities of scavengers at the site.

The managing director of LAWMA, Mr Ola Oresanya, said the golf course project would come under the agency’s second 10-year-rolling plan.
“In the rolling plan, we are focusing downstream and our downstream is at the disposal sites. Our landfills development is a real focus, we already sign contract for development of our state of the heart landfills sites at Epe and Badagry. And those landfill sites are the real focus for the next rolling plan and a site also will be located in Ogun state. That is around Mowe/Ibafo area that we took over. Then we will close down the Olusosun dumpsite completely and turn it into golf course. We will continue to build transfer stations and material recovery plants in Lagos”.
“Those are parts of the ten year rolling plan and we will increase our waste conversion to almost 70 per cent to 80 per cent of the wastes we generate in Lagos. The wastes will now be converted to something very useful within that ten years rolling plan. Then, we want to make sure that we get the economics of waste management very well and the economics must be perfect within the next ten year. So those are the key ingredients of those plans.’’

Fee Hike: OAU Students Threaten To Vote Out President Jonathan Next Year

Work-pics3249
Students of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Osun State, have appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan to fulfill the promise he made to them on reduction in the fees charged by the management of the university or be ready to lose the February 2015 presidential election.
The Student Union President, Mr. Isaac Ibikunle, and the Secretary, Mr. Oludare Bamidele, said this in a statement made available to our correspondent in Osogbo on Monday.
The president had held a brief meeting with the student union leaders when he visited the OAU to attend a political meeting organised by some Yoruba leaders on the campus.
Ibikunle had told our correspondent that the President promised to act fast on the demands of the students for reduction in the fees charged by the management of the university.
He noted that some students from poor background had dropped out of school because of the exorbitant fees being charged by higher institutions.
The student stated that crime would continue to be on the increase if education, which is the only sure way to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor, was priced out of the reach of poor students.
He said OAU students and the entire students all over the country would work against the president if he fails to fulfill the promise he made to them on the fees and other matters relating to the education sector.

YULETIDE:- Oil Communities Reject Agip’s Goat, 10 Bags Of Rice

agip-logo
There was mild drama in Nembe communities of Nembe Local Government Area of Bayelsa over the offer of a goat and 10 bags of rice to the elders and people of the area by the management of the Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NOAC).
The offer, meant as Christmas gift to the host communities of Nembe Kingdom, was, however, turned down by the people through the Oil and Gas committee headed by Chief Nengi James Orioworio.
LEADERSHIP gathered that the people of the oil rich Nembe Kingdom were angry because the gift items of a goat and 10 bags of rice was meant to be shared by the people of the communities and fishing settlements headed by a one-time minster of Power and the Amanayabo of Nembe Kingdom, King Edmund Daukoru.
Confirming the development in a statement issued yesterday and made available to newsmen, the Chairman of the Nembe Oil and Gas committee, Chief Nengi James Orioworio, described the gift as “a corporate embarrassment to the traditional institution and the good people of Nembe Kingdom which the people will never take kindly”.
Orioworio recalled a meeting with the General Manager District of the company when he visited King Edmund Dakoru, the Amanyanabo of Nembe Kingdom alongside his management team where issues of corporate social responsibilities were addressed.
He noted that for Agip to give 10 bags of rice and one goat to a community of about 500,000 people is a clear demonstration of the crass insensitivity of the multinational company to the community which is a major hub of Agip’s operations.
James stressed that the people of Nembe are a contented people who will never be cowed by any Greek gift that will cause disaffection among the people of the area.
According to him, Nembe Kingdom is in dire need of development and employment for the teeming unemployed youths alongside environmental protection. He warned that if this issue is not properly handled, it could affect the harmonious relationship and peaceful coexistence between the company and the community.

How 30 Boko Haram Insurgents Overran 1,000 Troops In Mubi

By Senator Iroegbu
It has emerged that despite the presence of over 1,000 well armed Nigerian troops in Mubi and its environs in Adamawa State, it took just a handful of 30 Boko Haram insurgents to capture the commercial city last October without firing a shot.
The development, THISDAY learnt, forms the fulcrum of the series of ongoing investigations and court martials by the military high command, which has blamed the capture of Mubi and other towns in Adamawa and Borno States on sabotage by sympathetic northern troops and some of their commanders who refused to fight the insurgents.
Military sources, who opened up on what transpired in several of the attacks by Boko Haram in the two states between September and October this year, revealed that the insurgents would not have succeeded had the troops who were deployed in several of the towns and villages that were overrun by the insurgents, defended the areas diligently.
“Those soldiers refused to fight, despite being better armed than the insurgents and instead ran away when only 30 insurgents invaded Mubi and its environs and captured the area without firing a shot. Instead of telling the truth they lie on social media and politicians lie on their behalf that the federal government is not arming them to fight Boko Haram.
“When Mubi was deserted, more insurgents followed suit and raided several establishments, especially banks in the town. In the Diamond Bank branch alone, they carted away over N100 million.
“The terrorists also invaded deserted military formations in Mubi and Bama (Borno State) where they stole arms and armoured tanks that they could not even operate. As such, they have been soliciting for the assistance of retired army personnel to help them to operate the tanks,” a military source informed THISDAY.
He further disclosed that when the military high command got wind of the sabotage by its own troops, it was so incensed that it proceeded to arrest hundreds of the soldiers and their commanders of northern origin and replaced them with non-Muslim, southern troops comprising mainly Yoruba and Igbo as well as troops from minority areas who were deployed from the Owerri brigade.
“Once we deployed more non-Muslim troops from Owerri in small companies, we started getting results, as they collaborated with civilian vigilante groups and local hunters in Adamawa, which enabled us to flush out the insurgents within a short period from Mubi and its environs.
“Our advances to flush out the insurgents continues to gain momentum and the troops have surrounded Madagali and other towns right now in order to recover lost territories,” he said.
He added that the success recorded by the military in curtailing attacks by the sect had been evident in recent weeks, saying: “If you noticed, they have resorted to using suicide bombers and hit and run tactics, as they are finding it difficult to hold on to territories.
“Unlike in the past, the Yuletide season was also relatively peaceful. That tells you that we have the upper hand and they are on the run.”
Despite the optimism expressed by the military source, THISDAY learnt that the ongoing offensive against Boko Haram in the north-east continues to encounter hiccups due to the high level conspiracy by some elements in the northern intelligentsia and elite to thwart the efforts of the federal government to end the insurgency.
THISDAY discovered that the renewed onslaught tagged “Operation No Mercy” has encountered well-orchestrated opposition from certain forces in the North who are not comfortable with the upper hand gained by the military in recent weeks.
An intelligence source disclosed that the elements averse to the operation are claiming that an all-out bombardment against the terrorists in occupied territories could lead to unacceptable “collateral damage”.
The source said the military and other security forces had been hampered by the myriad of protest letters by some emirs and political office holders claiming that some of their wives and daughters are being held captive in the areas.
Investigations further revealed that the forces sabotaging the operation cut across the military, traditional and political institutions in the north.
“We have been inundated with letters from emirs, even political office holders demanding that we should not venture further into those contended areas.
“They warned that there could be dire consequences should the military implement their all-out attack against Boko Haram terrorists in some of those strategic towns including Bama, Gwoza, Gamboru Ngala and others,” a source said.
The source recalled that the Borno Elders Forum (BEF) and Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) had used the same reason to fiercely oppose the more aggressive approach adopted by the former Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika (rtd), that was effective in tackling the Boko Haram Islamic sect in the North-east over a year ago.
“You would notice that accusations of human rights violations against the military is a constant weapon being applied by these elements to impede the war against the sect,” he stated.
He also revealed that the sect had effectively wiped out emirs and influential northerners who have expressed outrage over the wanton destruction of lives and property by the sect, while leaving out those who have tacitly supported the heinous acts of Boko Haram.

Sympathisers and relations were seen trooping to the village to commiserate with residents over the attack.

Abuja Prophet Reveals - God Is Angry with Goodluck Jonathan

A renowned Abuja based minister and General Overseer of the Garden of Love and Deliverance Ministries, Prophet Sunday Balogun has revealed that God is unhappy with President Goodluck Jonathan over the inability of the federal government to contain the current insurgency which has resulted in the death of thousands of Nigerians.
Prophet Balogun who spoke with journalists about what he termed a revelation from God on the state of the nation, urged President Jonathan to apply the full weight of the federal government in tackling insurgency ahead of the 2015 general elections.
He disclosed that the heavenly hosts have decreed that the PDP may lose the 2015 presidential election as well as many governorship seats if the level of violence and killings in the country did not end.
“God told me when I was in deep prayer some days ago that He is angry with the present leadership in the country and may change it because some politicians are happy that blood is flowing in several parts of the country…
“God is not happy that even those who did not labour to occupy their positions are jubilating about the blood of innocent people that are shed for nothing.
“The blood of innocent people, especially children, cries daily to the high heavens from the entire country and God says that it is the responsibility of our leaders especially the president to take appropriate action to stop the killings and the injustice.
“God told me that the president knows what to do to stop the carnage going on in the country but God is not happy that instead of taking necessary actions, Jonathan is attributing what is happening to global trends.
“The president should perform proper diagnosis of the problems which prevented our soldiers from defeating the Boko Haram and take necessary action to resolve the issues to stop the insurgency and bloodshed before the elections,” He said.
While declaring that the PDP is on the verge of losing the next election, Prophet Balogun said, “The blood of thousands of innocent people killed since the Boko Haram insurgency started in year 2009 has cried up to heaven and God is not happy that politicians do not seem to be concerned about it.”
